Anthony Calise – Guidance & Flight Control/Senior Scientist
Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Calise was a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech for 23 years. He retired in 2010. Previously he was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Drexel University for 8 years. He also worked for 10 years in industry for the Raytheon Missile Systems Division and Dynamics Research Corporation, where he was involved with analysis and design of inertial navigation systems, optimal missile guidance and aircraft flight path optimization. He presently provides consulting to a variety of aerospace companies. He is the author of over 250 technical papers and reports. He was the recipient of the USAF Systems Command Technical Achievement Award, the AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award (1992) for contributions to Singular Perturbation theory and its application to real-time, approximate, optimal guidance of aerospace vehicles, and the AIAA Aerospace Guidance, Navigation, and Control Award (2010) for seminal innovations and novel contributions in the theoretical development and application of biologically inspired adaptive control systems for aerospace vehicles and systems. He is a Fellow of the AIAA and former Associate Editor for the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics and for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine. The subject areas in which Dr. Calise has published include: Optimal Control Theory, Aircraft Flight Control, Optimal Guidance of Aerospace Vehicles, Adaptive Control, Adaptive Control of Flexible Structures and Inertial Navigation. In the area of adaptive control, Dr. Calise has developed weight adaptation laws, and a unique approach for ensuring stability margins in adaptive control systems based on loop transfer recovery. Applications include flight control of fighter aircraft, helicopters, missile and guided munition autopilot design, and adaptive guidance and flight control of autonomously guided parafoils.
In 2000 he received the Aviation Week and Space Technology Laurels Award for his development of an adaptive flight control design that was flight tested on the X-36 aircraft. He later developed an adaptive autopilot design in collaboration with Boeing Phantom Works (Dr. Kevin Wise and Dr. Eugene Lavretsky) that has been transitioned and fielded into the JDAM guided munition. The original design was performed in his laboratory at Georgia Tech, and subsequently HIL tested at Boeing and flight tested at Eglin AFB.
